Without any schoolwork during the month of May, I was able to enjoy listening to and playing a music more so than previous months. Again, my top ten list stays the same for the most part, with only a few new additions.

I was doing a little more research into Sky Terminal, as I've never heard of them before this song, and I was pleasantly surprised to see that this is another hometown band! Hailing from Toronto, the lead singer Marcel Preston originally attempted to become famous as a solo artist. His project took on a new shape when Mike Crofts and Matt Stride jumped on board. In two years of existence, the band has already released two albums, shared the stage with huge bands such as Thousand Foot Krutch, and been nominated in the Juno Awards for album of the year.

A Great Big World is on tour!! Actually, their tour begins June 1st, and they come to Toronto June 24th. The only reason why I would go see them live would be for the performance of this song. Although their album does have a few good songs, they are not show stoppers like Say Something.

Another worship song that has been one of my favourites for a while, but only graces my list now. This isn't a very popular worship song, but it can definitely have a huge impact when it is chosen for a set. I may be biased as a guitar player, but I personally think that the little riff during the intro that is repeated throughout the song really provides something special (even when it is played on piano).

One of my all time favourite songs, this record finally made a spot in my top ten list. I'm surprised this song isn't used more in church settings, or even retreats. In fact, I've never heard it being used ever! I'm thinking this would be the perfect song either before, during, or after communion.

Have you heard? Jesus Culture is releasing a new album June 3rd! Titled Unstoppable Love, all songs were recorded live during the Encounter Conference in California. The album features Chris Quilala (one of my favourite male singers) and Kim Walker-Smith (one of the most talented female singers in the world). The album contains 12 new songs, and is partnered with a BluRay disc containing recordings of 13 songs live, as well as Banning Liebscher's concluding message from the conference "Answering the Call to Prayer." Sounds like it is going to be awesome!

Following up their amazing album Live (which contained Great are You Lord), this month All Sons and Daughters released their self titled studio album. The reviews continue to be great, with everyone singing the praises of this band that continues to mature their sound. Possibly even cooler than the new album release is the news that All Sons and Daughters will be touring with David Crowder in October and November!

This song was introduced to me by one of my church's worship leaders, when we played it during a Sunday service. It has a great folky feel, and is really driven by the acoustic guitar. It's an easily recognizable song, and very catchy too!

Thriving in the music industry in recent years, 24 year old Zedd is a very talented producer and DJ. Surprisingly, he comes from a classical music family, playing piano and drums since the age of 4. In 2009, he embarked on his electronic music journey. Zedd originally started with remixes, and after earning much interest from the industry scene, he began releasing original music. Zedd's real name is Anton Zaslavski.

Although I am not a huge fan of Taylor Swift, especially her new image and music, I really like this one song. It's a simple acoustic song, and showcases Swift's talent at songwriting, and conveying meaning through her singing. I find that when Swift composes songs that are simpler, and more down to earth, she can create magic (i.e. this song, Ronan, Love Story).

The Toronto Symphony Orchestra

The facility, Roy Thomson Hall, was immaculate, a very professional venue. The seating was well-priced, and spacious. Everything about the Hall boasted excellency, producing an utmost atmosphere of quality. The staff, ushers and greeters, also added to this feeling, effectively guiding, enforcing rules, and helping the evening run smoothly.
The symphony themselves were fabulous. Renowned conductor Peter Oundjian demonstrated his mastery of his craft, and made each guest musician feel extremely welcome by guiding the audience in the way he wanted. His musicians also responded to his every movement, and seemed to have complete respect for him. All symphony sections produced clear sounding music that fluidly connected with each other, and provided a complete awe-inspiring performance.
Three pieces were performed, with the first being a quick new piece, written by a Canadian composer who was there to see her song played. Styled after Chicago's Aqua Tower, the music bounced in high contrast, but provided an interesting listen, one rich with dynamics and quick pace. The next featured piano virtuoso Richard Goode, who featured on a Mozart piece. His skill was undeniable, with a smaller band behind him to highlight his piano playing. Finally, the full symphony come together again to play a compelling version of Strauss' Ein Heldenleben. This story telling musical style was again a masterpiece of dynamics, and contrast, weaving notes into a moving listening experience.
Overall, this was an experience I would definitely recommend to anyone! Those with more musical knowledge will enjoy the Symphony moreso than those who don't, as the performances aren't based upon giving a show, but rather providing quality music. Still, this is an evening everyone will want to experience at least once in their life. The Toronto Symphony Orchestra offers many different options, with choirs, vocalists, soloists, and even children orchestra's providing entertainment. Definitely check out their website here to see their upcoming shows.
A quick note; many people take this very seriously! Dressing your utmost best isn't necessarily required, but dressing nicely is definitely my suggestion. The majority of people were decked out in their Sunday best.

Keith Urban's Fuse Album Review

Keith Urban's newest release, Fuse is another top album from one of the world's greatest artists. Filled with a few top chart songs, and the rest great in their own right, Keith Urban is one of those artists that never ceases to amaze, record after record. This album showcases his vocal talent, highlights his guitar prowess, and blasts his ability to create anthem songs. Urban expands the country style to contain some rock elements, creating an unique sound that continues to grow with each album he releases.
While this album may not be his best, it's still a must have for country lovers, and fans of Urban. The 16 track deluxe album contains some amazing hits, such as Somewhere in My Car, Cop Car, and Raise Em Up, but falls short in some of the lesser songs, such as Red Camaro, Come Back to Me, and Good Thing. Ultimately, my rating of this album is drastically lower because of the fringe songs in the album. The core singles that boost the album are amazing, characteristic of Keith Urban.
Already, Fuse has peaked at number 1 in Australia, Canada, and USA. Although the album is of the country genre, the album also achieved major success in other charts, averaging around number 35. Again, Keith Urban proves to have a golden touch when it comes to making hit records.

Top Ten Songs for April
April brought a new top song for me, as well as multiple new contemporary songs entering my chart! April was also a month of experiencing new types of song for me, with some British music, electronic songs, and some rock entering my playlists. I also had the opportunity to attend a symphony orchestra concert, which was an amazing experience!

An excellent new song, just released this month. It's the first I've heard of Sky Terminal, and from only their second album, but the quality of the song is still amazing. It almost sounds like a combination of Need to Breathe and The Fray, which produces an excellent result.
2. Say Something - A Great Big World - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VVgixOjGhVU
Still close to the top, but slowly this song is falling down my ratings. I still love the song, and each time I listen to it, something unique always strikes me, such as the small piano riffs, the beautiful lyrics, and the different pronunciation by both singers.
3. One Thing Remains - Jesus Culture - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DtmA3ji8RkY
I've been practicing this song a lot in preparation for a performance with my family. Possibly one of the most difficult things to do as a singer is to switch from one octave to a different one. The singer in this song, Chris Quilala, completes that change flawlessly. That for me makes the song. It changes the dynamics completely, stirs the emotions, and produces a more impactful punch.

Anyone else who can't wait until the FIFA World Cup this summer? This song is perfect to get you in the mood for some soccer. While it isn't related at all to the sport, FIFA uses it in many of their promos, video games, and commercials. Whenever I hear the song, it automatically reminds me of soccer.
5. Ever After - Marianas Trench - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cts6y-v7hhU
This would be the perfect song to close a concert! This song swells in the perfect places, teaches everyone a lesson in dynamics, and has the perfect closing lyrics as well. The song also utilizes different instruments extremely efficiently.

Another new song to my top ten list! This one is another dynamic song, as almost all electronic dance songs are. While the actual electronic DJing is quite amazing, the vocals to the song are pretty awesome as well. Hayley Williams from Paramore has one of the most crystal clear voices in the industry today.

This tune is also heavily reliant on dynamics to make it as special as it is. I played this song a lot during Easter time this month, and was continually struck in awe of the lyrics. The first two lines are extremely special in my mind, really touching upon the Easter spirit, and reminding us what exactly our lives are about.

Again, a dynamic tune! See a pattern here yet? This song is also great for worship settings, especially stripped down acoustic sets. These lyrics are slightly more simple, yet they are still packed with meaning. I find with songs like this one, each person grasps a slightly different purpose or meaning behind the song, and that makes it extremely special.

When I first listened to this song, I was extremely drawn by the unique beat. However, after listening to the song a little more and a little deeper, the lyrics are becoming the most astounding factor for me. The way rhymes are made in a way that really relates to the song is amazing. Most pop songs and artists aren't necessarily known for their songwriting abilities, but this song goes above and beyond that stereotype, and shows that some of these artists have real talent.
10. Man in the Mirror - Michael Jackson - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pEQAie8ABLE
Another song with amazing lyrics! Notice another pattern? This song, again is filled with deep meaning, and is very poetic. Michael Jackson was not only an extremely talented singer and dancer, but he has had some skill in songwriting.

Top Ten Songs for March
March yielded many of the same top songs as February, with not many new ones cracking my top ten list. The new additions to the list are older songs that I recently rediscovered, with a pattern of many worship songs dominating my playlist.

It remains as my top song...and is top on many radio stations as well. A few friends were telling me this past month that they are starting to hate the song due to radio overplay (seems like this happens to every popular song) but I still love it. Not sure how long I can hold out with it as number one, but for right now I still enjoy hearing it on the radio.

One of the lead vocalists of Jesus Culture is coming to Toronto May 24th. Definitely one of the greatest female singers in the Christian music industry right now, Kim Walker Smith will provide a live performance that you will not want to miss. Not only will new songs from her album Still Believe be performed, but she will also be leading a devotion, something that will be very special indeed.

I always love reading about how bands and artists rose to fame, as it provides inspiration and motivation for myself. The City Harmonic has another one of those great stories, made even cooler by the fact that they are local. Formed in 2009 in Hamilton Ontario, the band first served as a house worship team for student events. Today the four members have traveled internationally, won multiple awards, and they recently embarked on their first national tour in Canada. Amazing.
4. Dark Horse - Katy Perry - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F9S-88WxPdE
This is an unique song and a crazy awesome one! It's very catchy, and easy to memorize, with the different beat drilling itself into your mind. The short lyrical phrases are also pleasing to the ear. A lot of times I dislike the rapping genre, but I like the groove and what the rap in this song adds. Katy Perry has provided another gem with Dark Horse.
5. Oceans (Where Feet May Fail) - Hillsong United - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dy9nwe9_xzw
When comparing Hillsong United's new songs to their old worship songs, I personally feel that the quality of music has drastically fallen. This is really the only song close to the cutting edge that the old ones produced. Hillsong United used to be a game changer in the worship music industry. Not so much anymore...

Keith Urban is one talented guy. Not only can he play a wicked guitar, he can also sing amazingly, play the banjo, be an American Idol Judge, and write excellent songs. Urban is definitely one of my favourite musicians.
7. Came to My Rescue - Hillsong - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rWPABE3gycs
This is a pure Hillsong single, one that defines what they were all about in the past. For me, this song is perfect to define worship music. I freely admit however that sometimes I confuse Came to My Rescue with The Stand by Hillsong. To me, they just sound so similar. I love both songs, so it doesn't really matter, but still the resemblance between the two is uncanny.

At first, I didn't appreciate Michael Jackson or his music. However, his uniqueness and style have grown on me, so much so that I am beginning to listen to not only this song, but various others from him as well. A moral dilemma is raised concerning Michael Jackson though (and for that matter, other artists in the same boat as him). Should we support artists that are not doing the right things morally? Should we turn a blind eye to their actions, and focus solely on their music?

Although the song is relatively unknown in Canada, apparently it is very well-liked in the States. I would definitely like to hear this tune on Christian radio a lot more.

Mat Kearney's Young Love Review

With Young Love released in August of 2011, Mat Kearney continues to bring his unique mixture of rock and hip hop to Christian mainstream music, while at the same time embarking on a journey into popular culture music charts. With a deluxe edition released in May of 2012, the album contains a wide range of tracks, from strictly acoustic to rejuvenated hip hop. The progression and evolution of Nashville artist Mat Kearney can really be seen in his fourth studio album, with Kearney's signature unique sound dominating a fun album filled with witty lyrics, meaningful singles, and an overall enjoyable CD to listen to. Tackling main issues from the culture of today, Kearney takes simple lyrics, and transforms them into instant classics. There is not a single weak link in this album, with each song driven to either make you cry, or laugh and dance. It's a surprise that this album only achieved mediocre success in both pop and Christian charts, with a multiple singles from the record having the potential to be top songs. I would definitely recommend Young Love to anyone, with certain singles catering to different listeners. Personally, I couldn't even name a favourite song, with each one being in my top played songs. This album is a hidden gem that needs to be given more attention, with Mat Kearney continuing his rise as one of Christianity's greatest musical artists.

With Young Love released in August of 2011, Mat Kearney continues to bring his unique mixture of rock and hip hop to Christian mainstream music, while at the same time embarking on a journey into popular culture music charts. With a deluxe edition released in May of 2012, the album contains a wide range of tracks, from strictly acoustic to rejuvenated hip hop. The progression and evolution of Nashville artist Mat Kearney can really be seen in his fourth studio album, with Kearney's signature unique sound dominating a fun album filled with witty lyrics, meaningful singles, and an overall enjoyable CD to listen to. Tackling main issues from the culture of today, Kearney takes simple lyrics, and transforms them into instant classics. There is not a single weak link in this album, with each song driven to either make you cry, or laugh and dance. It's a surprise that this album only achieved mediocre success in both pop and Christian charts, with a multiple singles from the record having the potential to be top songs. Top Ten Songs for February
February was a month dominated by the Olympics, so unfortunately I didn't listen to as much music as I would have liked. Nonetheless, here are my top ten songs for the month of February!
1. Say Something - A Great Big World - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VVgixOjGhVU
So far, this song is the highlight of 2014 for me, and I wouldn't be surprised if it finishes on my final top ten list for the year. I love its simplicity, and yet it still manages to produce a profound emotional impact. I'm surprised we haven't heard the song on more movie soundtracks or even on more TV shows at this point.
2. Somewhere in My Car - Keith Urban - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eiyVSfQUFy4
This is by far the best single off of Keith Urban's new record Fuse. All the songs are gems, but this one stands out. The mixture of expert guitar riffs and pure country provide for a signature Urban song. Keith Urban remains one of my favourite artists, and is slowly taking over my favourite guitar player spot from Lincoln Brewster. I'd love to see the two go on a guitar war against each other...

The first time I heard this song was when a friend told me his church had attempted it for worship Sunday. Apparently it went really well, and as I'm always on the lookout for good praise and worship songs, I went home and researched it. I was shocked, but in a good way! The song is very unique, with an airy feel. I'm not 100% sure how it would go over in a church service, but I have no doubt that it touches hearts wherever it is played. The song really grew on me and I'd love to personally attempt it one Sunday.
4. Cop Car - Keith Urban - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V3pwCDigobg
This song is the signature single from Keith Urban's album Fuse. Personally I like Somewhere in My Car better, but I can see the attraction in this smooth, dynamic song. This one showcases Urban's voice moreso, and provides a better rounded song musically wise, with less attention given to Urban's guitar playing skills. However, there is one point in the song were the electric guitar takes over. Quickly afterwards it dies rather suddenly, something that I would have liked to have been different.
5. Meant to Live - Switchfoot - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l5BvhlHFO8w
This song is a great tune to rock out with. The best part is a strong guitar lead with an interesting riff that dominates throughout the whole song. The message behind the song is also great. I haven't heard a lot from Switchfoot, but I'm really interested in researching what they have produced so far.
6. Radioactive - Imagine Dragons - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hcIq2OSZQSc
This song fell slightly down in my rankings due to overplay on the radio. It seems wherever you go this song will play within 30 minutes. This is definitely due to the awesome qualities of the band and the song, but it does get old after a while. However, I would love to see a live performance of this song, especially with Imagine Dragons being such an unique band.
7. Holy (Wedding Day) - The City Harmonic - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_B0-ll_T7f8
Another one of my all-time favourite songs. The City Harmonic seem to be following in the footsteps of Jesus Culture, but have not fully cultivated that unique sound yet. Holy is a step in the right direction. It should also be mentioned that combining a band with a symphony is not an easy task, but The City Harmonic did an amazing job with it.

This song is perfect for any Sunday church service. Excellent lyrics with a beautiful spiritual meaning. I must say that I prefer my church youth band's rendition of this song a lot more. Slightly sped up, with some small changes, the song is so much more impactful and enjoyable to listen to! Good job Faith Youth band!

I saw Jesus Culture perform this song live last year, and it was even more amazing. I'm surprised more worship bands aren't using the song for their sets. Its emotional impact is unrivaled, and its capability to bring the Spirit of worship into an area is spectacular. Jesus Culture is the leading band in the music industry for this skill at this point, and it's something that will become more and more special as the years progress. This is the new sound of the worship industry.
10. Man in the Mirror - Michael Jackson - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pEQAie8ABLE
Although Michael Jackson was not the best person in the world morally, he's definitely in contention for the most musically talented. Man in the Mirror is just an example of Jackson's skill at unique phrasing, and adding small vocal tricks to create a musical identity for himself. The song itself is a classic, especially the key change halfway through the song. For a different version (slightly better in my opinion) check out The Midway State's cover here.
