Top Ten Songs for January

This post will be part of a monthly segment, listing my top ten songs for the month. They may be new releases, classics, or just songs that I've stumbled across. Either way, they are my favourites for the month.

1. Sooner or Later - Mat Kearney - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1Cniu2kMdUI
If I was Mat Kearney, I would use this song to open all of my concerts. Excellent start to the song, the words are amazing! The whole track is so simple, with certain riffs filling in the perfect areas. A great combination of synth, and instruments as well! Definitely my favorite for this month.

2. Radioactive - Imagine Dragons - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hcIq2OSZQSc
I love this song for its uniqueness. Nothing on the market is like this band or what they produce. The whole song makes you want to rock out. Their performance on the Grammy's of this song was stellar, although I would have preferred it without Kendrick Lamar. I definitely appreciated what he added to the mash-up, but I'm not a huge fan of rap.

3. Demons - Imagine Dragons - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mWRsgZuwf_8
Another quirky song from this quirky band. I'm still not sure if I like this one or Radioactive better...realistically they would be tied. Definitely worth mentioning is the fact that the song is dedicated to Tyler Robinson, who was claimed by cancer in 2013. He was 17.

4. Burn - Ellie Goulding - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CGyEd0aKWZE
While not the most difficult song at all, it's definitely catchy. Plus, no one has a voice like Ellie Goulding. The lyrics are really simple, and basically the song is just repeating the one major bar, with varying dynamics really making the song.

5. Lego House - Ed Sheeran - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c4BLVznuWnU
Ed Sheeran is one of the most talent singer songwriter's right now, if not the best. Also, he's got a hilarious personality that doesn't really match his appearance. He's also a true musician, only doing what he does for the love of music. One of my favourite artists.

6. One Thing Remains - Jesus Culture - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DtmA3ji8RkY
Want a lesson in musical dynamics and passion? Look no further. This song is probably my favourite worship song ever. The dynamics are amazing, utilizing the full band and vocals to the maximum.  The music just inspires and uplifts the listener. Definitely a great band, with another great worship song. I'm surprised more churches aren't using this song in their morning sets. This song is the banner for free worship, simply amazing the response that it can grab from people's hearts.

7. Holy (Wedding Day) - The City Harmonic - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_B0-ll_T7f8
An amazing theatrical song, along the same lines as One Thing Remains by Jesus Culture. This song is made even better by the fact that The City Harmonic is a close to hometown band, based out of Kingston Ontario. Keep an eye on them, they're going to be a big Christian band one day. Their last album was great, but I hope they begin to try to make some original worship songs. Their style would be rejuvenating in that area.

8. Say Something - A Great Big World - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VVgixOjGhVU
This song is pure emotion. A great singer, with simple piano music, and some strings to add dynamics, creating a punch to the heart. Absolutely amazing, one of the best currently circulating radio stations. Sometimes the covers are even better, such as Alex and Sierra's version on X Factor. I'm not a huge fan of the version with Christina Aguilera, I don't think the two voices are fit for each other. Still, this song is amazing.

9. Chasing Cars - Snow Patrol - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pm4FjTR3jWg
This song is simply a classic. Again, an amazing song, excellent lyrics, simple but meaningful. This song is one that nothing can ever match, it's in a category of its own.

10. Thank You - Keith Urban - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8CfGPE9XaNw
One of my favourite artists, and one of my favourite guitar players, it seems like he is also a great piano player and songwriter!
